Edgy Eft Knot 1 Released – Ubuntu 6.10

Posted in Development Software, Linux, Site News

Ubuntu

Just a few days ago, Tollef Fog Heen has announced the release of Edgy Eft Knot 1, which in time, will become Ubutun 6.10, forecasted to be release by October this year.

The pre-releases of Edgy Eft are not recommended for anyone who requires a stable system, and definitely not encouraged for installation on production machine. Knot 1 is the first in a series of milestone CD images that will be released throughout the Edgy development cycle, as images that are known to be reasonably free of showstopper CD-build or installer bug, while representing very current snapshots of Edgy. Knot 1 are available in Ubuntu, Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu versions.

Gizmo Project – Free Phone Call For Your Computer

Posted in Fun Stuff, Linux, Mac OS, Site News, Web Apps, Windows

Gizmo Project

For the past many years, Skype has monopolised the telephony industry and market by offering cheap phone calls to several destinations all around the world. It was not long ago before Skype was acquired by eBay following a million dollars take-over. However, even cheap calls to several destinations may not necessarily last for long, with some VoIP companies (and services) offering FREE calls to landlines and mobiles, such as VoIPstunt.

Should there be any concern if VoIPStunt is meant only for Windows, you’ll be glad that there is another service, known as the Gizmo Project, which provides free calls on your Windows, Mac OS X as well as Linux system.

SurveillizCam 1.13 Lite

Posted in Fun Stuff, Graphics, Utilities, Web Apps, Windows

SurveillizCam

A good thing about this SurveillizCam software is that it allows you to change your computer into a video capturing device, such as a surveillance system. It has the capability to monitor your home, office and surrounding by automatically detecting motion change and also the capability to record these motion clips into video.

When there is motion detected, the web camera sends the signal to the software to activate the motion video such that it could either send the video over the Internet, or record the video into MPEG1 or MPEG4 format. Furthermore, it could also activate the alarm sound, when supported.

MyLogon 2.0.1 – An Alternative Network Logon for Windows

Posted in Fun Stuff, Utilities, Windows

MyLogon

Feeling bored of your old classic Windows logon screen? Try something new. MyLogon 2.0.1 is an alternative to your Windows Logon or Welcome Screen. It is particularly useful for laptop-users who connect to multiple domains, business workgroups, data-entry stations, and situations where users will need to log in at several specific networks at times.

The two main differences between MyLogon and the usual Windows login are that, firstly, it is not essential for the computer to be a domain-member in order to log on to a server, and secondly, the act of logging on to a network does not change the behaviour of the user’s own computer, thus maintaining your user profile.

Microsoft’s User Profile Hive Cleanup Service

Posted in Utilities, Windows

MS Windows Logo

This cool little application from Microsoft, known as User Profile Hive Cleanup service, is pretty useful when you want to ensure user sessions are completely terminated when a user logged off from the computer. In normal circumstances, the system processes and applications in your Windows operating system occassionally maintain connection to the registry keys even after the user logged off from the system. As such, in actual fact, the user session is prevented from completely ending, thus resulting in problems when using Roaming User Profiles in server environment, or when using locked profiles (implemented through the Shared Computer Toolkit for Windows XP).

HandBrake 0.7.1

Posted in Linux, Mac OS, Utilities, Windows

HandBrake

This is something nice for the Mac OS X fans. Handbrake is a GPL’d multiplatform, multithreaded DVD to MPEG-4 ripper/converter. Originally, it was meant to be available only on BeOS, but now it has been ported over to MacOS X and to GNU/Linux. Unfortunately, a Windows port is not available, but it is currently been worked on.
