Google SketchUp

Google seems to be extending its arm further to all kind of applications ranging from Mails, to videos, as well as advertising and even online marketing. Well, in the recent news I have read, Google has bought SketchUp, renaming it to Google SketchUp.

Google SketchUp is a simple 3D modeling software program. Users can experience the modelling of 3D models of any objects even with a few functional tools in the software. The design is done with great precision and accuracy. As it is part of Google, users can easily place their finalised model in Google Earth, and sharing them with other users by posting them to the 3D Warehouse.

There are actually 2 versions – Google SketchUp, which is a free version, and SketchUp Pro 5. The difference are quite significant. Pro users are able:

  • - to print and export raster images at higher-than-screen resolution.
  • - have access to the following 3D export formats: DWG, DXF, 3DS, OBJ, XSI, VRML and FBX.
  • - to export animations and walkthroughs as MOV (Mac) or AVI (Windows) files.
  • - have access to Sandbox Tools (for organic modeling of terrain, etc) and the Film & Stage Tools (for pre-viz work).
  • - access to free email tech support for two years after purchasing SketchUp Pro.
  • - Only the SketchUp Pro is approved for commercial use; the Free version is licensed for personal use only.

Minimum System Requirement for Google SketchUp (not Pro version)
For Windows:

  • * Microsoft Windows® 2000, XP Home or Professional Editions
  • * 600 MHz Pentium® III processor
  • * 128 MB RAM
  • * 80 MB of available hard-disk space
  • * Video card that is 100% OpenGL compliant
  • * Windows compatible pointing device
  • * Microsoft® Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher
  • * Windows® Media Player or QuickTime 5.0 and web browser for multimedia tutorial.

  • Coming soon…..

While the Google SketchUp is free, the SketchUp Pro version would cost you a price of US$495 (€469 / £315)! There are a wide range of plug-ins available at the website, however they will only work with the Pro version.

The Google SketchUp version can be downloaded from here.
