Portable VLC Media Player

At first, we have Portable Firefox, then next comes Portable GIMP, eventually we have a Portable VLC Media Player!!

If you have been reading SoftSift for quite some time, you would have known the last two portable applications which I have introduced to you. For those who are new here, just a quick note, portable apps are applications which can be carried around in your storage device, such as USB flash drive. For here, Portable VLC media player is simply a media player packaged as a portable application so that you can carry your audio and video files while on the move.

The VLC (initially VideoLAN Client) media player 0.8.5-test2 beta release is available for download here. This software application has been precompiled for the following operating systems, and is available in binaries:

  • - Windows
  • - Debian
  • - Mac OS X
  • - SUSE Linux
  • - Mandrake Linux
  • - Familar Linux
  • - BeOS
  • - Fedora Core
  • - YOPY/Linupy
  • - Red Hat Linux
  • - Zaurus
  • - WinCE/PocketPC

Other than these, users may have to compile them directly from the source code, available here.

Note: VLC is a highly portable multimedia player for various audio and video formats (MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, mp3, ogg, …) as well as DVDs, VCDs, and various streaming protocols. It can also be used as a server to stream in unicast or multicast in IPv4 or IPv6 on a high-bandwidth network.
