Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer

I hardly heard of this before. In fact Microsoft has developed so many tools, utilities and applications and most of which were hidding behind their main-stream products, and thus left unknown. One of them is the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA).

The Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer is an easy-to-use tool designed for the IT professional that helps small- and medium-sized businesses determine their security state in accordance with Microsoft security recommendations and offers specific remediation guidance.

IT administrators can improve their security management process by using MBSA to detect common security misconfiguration and missing security updates on their computer systems.

MBSA primarily supports users with:

  • • 2000+ SP3 and later
  • • XP+ and later
  • • 2000+ and later
  • • Server 2000 SP4+
  • • other products supported by Microsoft Update

MBSA is built on the Windows Update Agent and Microsoft Update infrastructure, to ensure consistency with other Microsoft management products including Microsoft Update (MU), Windows Server Update Services (WSUS), Systems Management Server (SMS) and Microsoft Operations Manager (MOM).

Several other leading third party security vendors are also using MBSA for analyzing their security state, scanning over 3 million computers every week.
