Ophcrack 2.2 – Fastest Windows Password Cracker

Posted in Linux, Utilities, Windows

Ever tried cracking Windows password before? Well, if you have tried, it may not seem easy at all. First of all, most programs would either purged the true password by brute-force attack. Secondly, such cracking applications may take almost forever when the password length increases.

Although SoftSift introduces the latest Software release, but it is in no way to promote hacking or cracking on networks or systems in any illegal way. However, we are here to introduce you, one of the fastest, if not, the fastest Windows Password Cracker, Ophcrack 2.2.

Ophcrack 2.2 is a Windows password cracker based on the faster time-memory trade-off using rainbow tables (as shown in the picture above). It comes with a GTK+ Graphical User Interface and runs on both Windows and Linux systems. This release is an evolution of the original Ophcrack 1.0 developed at EPFL. This latest release is a new variant of Hellman’s original trade-off, with better performance and it can recover 99.9% of alphanumeric passwords in seconds.

New Features since version 2.1

  • * Support of the new table set (alphanum + 33 special characters) WS-20k
  • * Easier configuration for the table set
  • * Automatic definition of the number of tables to use at the same time (batch_tables) by queriying the system for the size of the memory
  • * Speed-up in tables reading
  • * Cleaning of the memory to make place for table readahead (linux version only)
  • * Improved installer for Windows version

In the Windows version, Ophcrack 2.2 comes with an installer that will prompt users for an automatic install or download of the tables. The Linux version comes as a source package, which can be compiled using the ./configure, make and make install commands.

The tables have to be downloaded by hand, from the URL given below or copied from the DVD or LiveCD. Ophcrack 2.2 can be downloaded from the project page on SourceForge.
