Windows Live Writer

When it comes to Microsoft, it really means business!! Ever since blogging has starting creeping into almost everyone’s daily routine, it become inevitable that Microsoft has to make a move to capture the blogging market as well. It seems that their very own Windows Live Spaces isn’t sufficient, and will be targeting at a bigger group in the blog market, and that will be those pro-bloggers, users who host their own blogs on their preferred web hosting servers.

If you know what WordPress can do for you, then you would probably get it by now what Microsoft intend to set free their propriety software, known as Windows Live Writer Beta.

While Microsoft welcomes a new wave of users to download their beta version of Windows Live Writer, how good is it really compared to what you might be using so far, such as WordPress? The new software is already available for download today.

Note that, this is not a WordPress replacement, it is a software client for helping users to write blogs.

Seemingly familiar to the interface that appears in Office applications (not those unreleased Office 2007), Windows Live Writer is a desktop application that allows users to compose blog posts using either Windows Live Spaces or their current blog service.

One of the special features includes WYSIWYG Authoring. With it, it provides author an exact visual look and layout even before the blog is being published. Yes, that’s the specialty of Microsoft, ever since Microsoft Office became the worldwide used office application. The Writer knows the styles of your blog such as headings, fonts, colors, background images, paragraph spacing, margins and block quotes and enables you to edit your post using these styles. Furthermore, it includes views such as HTML source code, providing expert users who love to work in source codes, and also the web preview mode.

Other features include:

  • - Photo Publishing: inserting, customizing, and uploading photos to your blog instantly.
  • - Map Publishing: integrating the Writer’s ability with Windows Live Local map.
  • - Writer SDK: Using the Windows Live Writer SDK to extend the capabilities of Writer to publish additional content types.
  • - Compatibility: It is a client for Windows Live Spaces but also works with other weblogs including Blogger, LiveJournal, TypePad, WordPress (and many others). Furthermore, Writer supports RSD (Really Simple Discoverability), the Metaweblog API, and the Movable Type API.
