Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft Beta

Posted in Development Software, Linux, Site News

Hot on the heels, Ubuntu is almost approaching to the release of the final release candidate in October. However, before that happens, Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft Beta is now available for public download. In addition, Kubuntu, Edubuntu and Xubuntu were also released.

This may be a pre-release of Edgy Eft version, and not recommended for anyone who requires a stable system, but the Ubuntu has been known to be develop quite a stable release even in Alpha development stage, and needless to mention when the version is currently now in Beta. Nonetheless, it is still not recommended in production machine.

A lot of changes have been made since the Dapper Drake version (6.06 LTS). First of all, a new init system, known as the Upstart, has been incorporated into the Edgy Eft version, along with a slicky-brown Ubuntu logo splash screen during boot up. Upstart is meant to make the system boot up faster, but as far as my system has tested, there is not much speed improvement over Dapper Drake. However, this could just be due to the operating system currently at beta stage. There are still some bugs to clear off. During the Alpha stage, it was even much slower. I do see the improvement over the past few Alphas, though. So, do sit and wait, I’m sure the final release will be better.

With a fresh new look given to the slash login screen, new wallpaper and icons have also been packaged together in this new release. The windows have more rounded edges compared to previous version. New stuffs were noted; the desktop have a yellow post-it, known as Tomboy which allows users to write down note instantly. Ubuntu would have Gnome 2.16 to thank for this little nice application. Besides Tomboy, there is also F-Spot, a powerful photo management software.

Other applications worth mentioning include two notable betas, Firefox “Bon Echo” Beta 2 and Gaim 2.0. Their introduction into Edgy Eft is to my surprise. Other applications include the latest release of OpenOffice 2.0.4, and Xorg 7.1, which can be used with AIGLX to work with Compiz, and more….

So, the story is Ubuntu is preparing for a massive launch of Edgy Eft, expected on 26 October 2006.
