GSpot 2.60 Beta 01 – Video Codec Identification Tool

Posted in Site News, Utilities, Windows

What a name! Unfortunately, the GSpot in this post has got nothing to do with sexuality. GSpot 2.60 Beta 1 was developed by Steve G. In general, it is a video codec identification tool, which automatically identifies which video codec and audio compression method is used on .avi files, if a proper matching codec is installed.

In this beta version, a new mechanism is incorporated so that MPEG information is obtained much more accurate. Also, it runs the thread for MPEG in AVI (e.g. DivX) format, but not in other formats, as Steve G has yet to finish them in this release. Well, this preliminary version has very partial support for certain formats where you may even see the duration & frame count absent altogether, but it is currently being worked on, so hopefully it will be there in the next release.

  • · Determines which video codec an AVI file uses
  • · Determines what audio encoding method the file uses
  • · Determines what codecs you have installed, and whether you have the one needed
  • · Up-to-date database of over 200 codecs, including the latest DivX 5 and XVID systems
  • · Shows reported audio bitrate and calculates video bitrate
  • · Reports if the file is truncated, and how many bytes are missing. Great for downloaders.
  • · Identifies MPG, MPEG, MOV, WMA, WMV, ASF or OGG/OGM if an unknown non-AVI file is examined.
  • · Shows RIFF INFO (title, etc) if present, including hidden ASCII in the “JUNK” field
  • · Easy to use (”File > Load” and you’re done)
  • · Microscopic footprint – download size only 29KB

More update details are available here.

As GSpot is free for personal use, you may download GSpot 2.60 Beta 1.
