Ever heard of a Linux distro named after a pet? Well, here is Puppy 2.13, a small, simple yet powerful, evolutionary operating system based on GNU Linux. Puppy is rather different from several other Linux distro, and you will see what it means after reading their Mission Statement.

Mission Statement

  • * Puppy will easily install to USB, Zip or hard drive media.
  • * Booting from CD, Puppy will load totally into RAM so that the CD drive is then free for other purposes.
  • * Booting from CD, Puppy can save everything back to the CD, no need for a hard drive.
  • * Booting from USB, Puppy will greatly minimise writes, to extend the life of Flash devices indefinitely.
  • * Puppy will be extremely friendly for Linux newbies.
  • * Puppy will boot up and run extraordinarily fast.
  • * Puppy will have all the applications needed for daily use.
  • * Puppy will just work, no hassles.
  • * Puppy will breathe new life into old PCs

This incredible software is not just an ordinary operating system. It allows users to install this over several media and devices, and not just your hard disk drive. Below are some installation devices which can be used.

Supported Media

  1. Flash drive
  2. Live CD
  3. Zip drive
  4. Hard disk drive
  5. Network
  6. Emulator

As you think a small application might not contain anything much of use, but you’ll be surprised. Some of the applications that come with Puppy are as follows:

  • Word processing
  • Instant messenging
  • Spreadsheet editor
  • Vector image editing
  • Audio
  • Conversion, printing and scanning
  • Window manager
  • Web page editor
  • Personal accounting
  • Web browser
  • Address book and calendar
  • File manager
  • Outliner and organiser
  • Video
  • Package management
  • Database
  • Desktop publishing
  • Bitmap image editing
  • Games
  • Networking
  • Help and more….

Indeed, this is just extraordinary. With a typical small installation, yet Puppy managed to achieve them. The Live CD is basically only 50-80MB, yet every application that users may require are just available from there. The benefits is also enormous. With everything mounted onto the RAM, you will expect applications to be running a top speed. There will not be an issue of file swapping due to lack of memory.
