The processor emulator, QEMU 1.3.0pre10 has now gone open source. It is basically a generic machine emulator and virtualizer. With this application, users can run different operating systems and programs made for one machine, on a different machine. By using dynamic translation, it has achieved very good performances.

When used as a virtualizer, QEMU achieves near native performances by executing the guest code directly on the host CPU. A host driver called the QEMU accelerator (also known as KQEMU) is needed in this case. The virtualizer mode requires that both the host and guest machine use x86 compatible processors. Normally, QEMU is used with Kqemu to provide additional acceleration to the processes.

Binaries and source codes are available, hence Solaris, Macintosh, Windows and Linux users can enjoy the benefits of this open source emulator.
