OpenOffice.org is known to be a free alternative for Microsoft Office suite, as the latter is not available for free. Initially, OpenOffice.org runs only on Windows and Linux operating systems. Macintosh users will be pleased to know that a Mac OS X version is now available – but only as a development release.

Known as OpenOffice.org Aqua, this application requires Mac OS X 10.4 (Tiger) to run. However, it is important to note that the software may still encounter crash and could potentially cause loss of data. Therefore, it is advised not to install this on production machines.

Furthermore, there are a couple of other features which remain unworkable in this release:

  • * Print not allowed
  • * PDF export does not properly work as the text won’t show on the page right
  • * Starting OpenOffice.org from a shared folder does not work
  • * Copy and paste does not fully work
  • * OpenOffice.org will crash after quitting
  • * Some text is not drawn in places like Impress
  • * Impress will not recognise multiple monitors

The software supports the following Mac machines:

  1. * Intel Mac
  2. * PowerPC Mac
