Posted in Audio, Fun Stuff, Linux, Mac OS, Utilities, Video, Web Apps, Windows

Early this month, VLC Media Player Portable 0.9.9 was released for public to be downloaded. The portable version is packaged as part of a portable app, so that you can take your audio and video files along with everything you need to play on the go.

This latest version includes a multilingual installer and fixes a bug where directory was left locally. Furthermore, it is released under the open source, and it is completely free. The VLC Media Player is both a cross-platform multi-media player and a streaming server.

As a media player, it is highly portable, supporting various audio and video formats, such as MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4, DivX, etc. Furthermore, the VLC player also playbacks DVDs and VCDs. In addition, it also works equally well as a streaming server to support unicast or multicast in IPv4 and IPv6 on high-bandwidth network. The application is also available in many operating systems, thus making it ultra-portable.

UltraMixer 2.3.5.1 – Professional Digital DJ Solution

Posted in Audio, Business Software, Fun Stuff, Linux, Mac OS, Software Companies, Utilities, Windows

Just found something really cool! The UltraMixer 2.3.3 is a DJ audio mixing software that allows users to mix digital music in various formats, such as MP3, WMA, AAC, OGG, WAV or even CD in real-time. The basic hardware requirement is a good sound card. Similar to a physical DJ audio mixer, the DJ turntables are replaced by two digital SoundPlayers.

Here is some background information:

“…UltraMixer is the first DJ software in the world, that is available for the most popular operating systems Windows, Linux and Mac OS X…”

Exactly! Just when you need it at the party or in a restaurant, this “digitalised” version of DJ turntables will do just great! Three versions of UltraMixer are available; namely, the Free Edition, Basic Edition and the Professional Edition. The professional version costs as much as £129 and the Basic Edition costs approximately £59. If you are concerned about the cost, give the free edition for a trial run for no cost at all. However, it is only meant for private, non-public use.

Apple iTunes 8.0.1 – Security Release

Posted in Audio, Business Software, Fun Stuff, Mac OS, Site News, Software Companies, Video

Although I am not an avid fan of Apple (which many Apple / Mac fans will probably boycott me), I’m happy to inform that Apple has release the next version of Apple iTunes 8.0.1, as part of security fix over the version 8.0.

New Changes

  • • Seamlessly plays the current song when creating a new Genius playlist.
  • • Improves syncing spoken menus to iPod nano.
  • • Addresses an issue of deleting HD TV episodes when downloading.
  • • Improves checking for updates from the App Store.
  • • Improves accessibility with VoiceOver.
  • • Addresses problems syncing Genius results to iPod.

Because this version provides a lot more performance and bug fixes, particularly security fixes, iTunes users are highly encouraged to upgrade to this latest version. If you are using Mac OS X, this update is available from the Software Update.

QuickTime Bug Security Vector Attack Alert

Posted in Audio, Mac OS, Software Companies, Video, Web Apps, Windows

According to Dave Merten, there is a security bug existing in QuickTime that may be used as a vector to attack the system. Available on both Mac OS X and Windows, the latest version of QuickTime 7.5.5 has been reported that the ” ” tag fails to handle long strings, which can lead to a heap of overflow in QuickTime Player, iTunes or any other programs that utilise media using QuickTime plug-in.

Such programs include, but not limited to, browser, Mail or even when a user attempts to view a file with Quick Look. The outcome results in crashing the programs, but the malicious code could be added to such files, and may be executed with no user interaction.

Detail are as follow:

Exploit: OSX.Exploit.QT755-1
Discovered: September 18, 2008
Risk: Low

No patch is yet to be released.

VLC Media Player 0.9.2

Posted in Audio, Fun Stuff, Linux, Mac OS, Site News, Utilities, Video, Windows

The latest release of VLC Media Player 0.9.2 is now available for public to download. To-date, it has already achieved close to 1 million downloads for this version, averaging about 2-3 downloads per second (Quite curious myself too, as if that’s really the case).

Download VLC Player here.

Skype Logo

It has been a long time since I provide the latest news of any latest software release. This time, I hope to introduce Skype for Linux 1.4 Gold, codename Panacea.

The choice of this codename is in contention with a Greek mythology; Paacea, daughter of Asclepius, God of Medicine, and the granddaughter of Apollo, God of Healing, is a goddess of cures. And thus, the name is chosen for this version of Skype for Linux – in compairson of the improved voice call quality.

MythTV 0.20.2 – Watch TV Online

Posted in Audio, Linux, Mac OS, Software Companies, Video, Web Apps

MythTV ScreenshotMythTV is a GPL licensed suite of programs that allow you to build the mythical home media convergence box on your own using Open Source software and operating systems.

Some of the functionalities are:

  • * pause, fast-forward and rewind live Television.
  • * install multiple video capture cards to record more than one program at a time.
  • * have multiple servers, each with multiple capture cards in them. All servers are centrally managed and all programs are scheduled by the Master backend.
  • * have multiple clients (called “frontends” in MythTV parlance), each with a common view of all available programs. Any client can watch any program that was recorded by any of the servers, assuming that they have the hardware capabilities to view the content; a low-powered frontend will not be able to watch HDTV, for example.
  • * use any combination of standard analog capture card, MPEG-2, MJPEG, DVB, HDTV, USB and firewire capture devices.
  • * Program Guide Data in North America is downloaded from schedulesdirect.org, a non-profit organization which has licensed data from Tribune Media Services. This service provides almost two weeks of scheduling information. Program Guide Data in other countries is obtained using XMLTV.
  • * MythTV implements a UPNP server, so a UPNP client should automatically see content from your MythTV system.

This program is known to work on both Linux and Mac OS X (PowerPC and Intel), unfortunately it does not run on Windows. (more…)

YouTubeDesktop – Beta

YouTubeDesktop

Most users would have already known about YouTube, one of the richest online video archive, powered by Google. Though it is rather easy to browse and search for videos in YouTube directly from its website, it is undoubtedly easier with YouTubeDesktop, an impressive dynamic web application, coupled with modern design for search, watching and even downloading videos from the web!

As according to the developer, YouTubeDesktop is designed based on the key idea; that is, to bring normal desktop experience to the browser. Within the web application itself, windows can be dragged, resized and minimized into a tray. It is even possible to drag-and-drop videos between players and result, all within a single web application, hence making it one of the richest, if not the best web application for viewing and managing video content. The incredible flexibility of the design is encompassed by the user-friend interface and functionality.
