Drupal enthusiasts and power users, take note: the latest version of Drupal 6.5 and Drupal 5.11 are now released for upgrades. Both these versions are maintenance releases that primarily focus on fixing problems, as well as patching security vulnerabilities.

Upgrading to these versions is highly recommended. Also, note that there are no new features incorporated in these releases. The change logs can be found in here (v6.5) and here (v5.11).

I knew some day, for sure, someone would come up with this idea of introducing a Ubuntu (Linux) operating systems for ASUS Eee PC, an ultra-light and mobile laptop, weighing barely 1kg. So, what do we have here? It’s Ubuntu Eee 8.04.1, powered and modded from Ubuntu.

From the original version of Ubuntu, the software has been streamlined and compressed to a lightweight operating system, specially meant for ASUS Eee PC. A brand new interface is introduced, following by a couple of fixes and enhanced hardware support. Hence, instead of installing the original version of Ubuntu, the Ubuntu Eee does fantastically well. This release supports various series, such as Eee 701 series, 2G, 900, 901, 1000 and 1000H models. Thus, there is no more worries when you need to install Ubuntu onto your Eee laptops now.

Picasa should ring a bell when this name is mentioned. I believe most of you will know that this application is a photo software, made free by Google. In the past, only Windows versions of Picasa have been actively maintained and improved. With the rising demand from the Linux community, the Linux-compatible version is also catching up with the Windows compatriot.

In less than 3 days, Mozilla released the next version of Firefox 3.0.3. According to the release note, the developers have found and fixed a problem where users were unable to retrieve saved passwords or save new passwords.

This bug has been filed under bug 454708. There is no any other changes. For more information on this new release, you may want to check out version 3.0.2, which was more of a major update from the previous version.

I did not realise the existence of this bug since I never save my passwords using the browser. I’m glad that Mozilla managed to turn this over within 72 hours.

Just a moment ago, when I logged on to my laptop to use Mozilla Firefox, I found that Mozilla has released the next version of Firefox - Firefox 3.0.2. So, catch the latest version to update your Mozilla Firefox browser now.

Over the last few weeks, I’m sure you have been stormed by Google’s release of its own web browser - Google Chrome. A lot of comparison has been made on the speed improvement on the Javascript, benchmarking the Chrome’s V8 against Mozilla’s TraceMonkey. However, do note that this version does not include TraceMonkey, which was rumoured to be much faster than Google Chrome.

Anyway, users are advised to update to this latest version, as it contains several bug fixes.

Mozilla Firefox 3.0.2

The latest release of Google Chrome version 0.2.149.30 still considered as a beta software, albeit it might be running stable for 99% of the time. Google is very cautious at using the word “stable” as they did not want to perceive a release version to be buggy at any point in time.

To me, this latest version of Google Chrome works like a charm for me. However, to be adventurous, I suppose there must be some developing releases that we can try out, especially we know that Google Chrome is an open source web browser and users can even build them on their own.

The latest release of VLC Media Player 0.9.2 is now available for public to download. To-date, it has already achieved close to 1 million downloads for this version, averaging about 2-3 downloads per second (Quite curious myself too, as if that’s really the case). The VLC Media Player is both a cross-platform multi-media player and a streaming server.

News for WordPress users! The next release of WordPress 2.6.2 is now available and released for your installation or upgrade, as mentioned in our previous post. According to Ryan in his blog, a critical issue that is being resolved in this version pertains to blog owners allowing open registration to the public. This was basically due to the dangers of SQL Column Truncation and weakness of mt_rand() function, as pre-warned by Stefan Esser.

Prior to this version, it is possible for anyone to create a username such that it will allow resetting another user’s password to a randomly-generated password in an open registration WordPress blog. Although not disclosed to the attacker, the problem itself is rather annoying. However, when coupled with a weakness in random number seeding in mt_rand() function, it is a security exploit as attacker is able to utilise this to predict the randomly-generated password.

Besides this, WordPress 2.6.2 also consists of several other bug fixes. All users are highly advised to upgrade to this version, for security purpose.
