The use of httpTorrents gives users the option to download files directly without having to use a BitTorrent client. How cool is that!

It is always 100% download and guaranteed with fast speed (claims obtained from website). Everyone can use httpTorrents, but in the future the download speed and number of simultaneous downloads will be limited for free users. Office 2010 Starter Beta

Posted in Beta, Business Software, Web Apps, Windows

Microsoft Office 2010Well, news have been spreading around in the Internet world that even before Microsoft Office 2010 Starter Beta is officially released for testing, there were already torrents found online. Personally, I won’t really recommend any one to try downloading these unauthorised software, fearing that there could be bugs, of even viruses that come along with the setup.

On the other hand, if you truly want to be an official beta tester, why not do it the right way – via the Microsoft Office 2010 Starter Program Nomination Form [Microsoft via Digital Inspiration]. The new version, known as Office 2010 Starter Edition, will include Word and Excel applications but with limited functionality.

Here is a comment provided by the official:

All you need to do is use Office Starter 2010 Beta at home over the next few months, and let us know what you think. Office Starter 2010 includes Microsoft Word Starter 2010 and Microsoft Excel Starter 2010, which are great for basic tasks like writing letters, editing your resume, or creating a family budget.

The public beta of Office 2010 will start later this year though you can try Office Web Apps now itself.

Posted in Beta, Fun Stuff, Site News, Software Companies, Web Apps, Windows

Google ChromeI have to apologise for my delay in reporting the latest software release on this site. Now that I am back, I hope to write up more reports here. Google Chrome 4.0.223.16 Beta is now released.

It is probably not a surprise to you when most of Google’s applications are labelled “beta“, but not for Google Chrome. Its stable version is at version 3.x, whereas this release is the next version of 4.x.

This new beta comes with many speed improvements. Google Chrome is becoming dynamic, with the ability to construct and change elements on web pages as fast as possible. Performance scores have improved by 30% since our current stable release, measured by Mozilla’s Dromeao DOM Core Tests!

TMonitor 1.01 Beta – from CPUID

Posted in Beta, Fun Stuff, Utilities, Windows

CPUID has just rolled out a new product – TMonitor 1.01 Beta. This application is aimed to display the active clock of each individual thread of a multi-core, multi-threaded processor.

The software has a very high refresh rate (~20Hz) that allows users to visualize the smallest clock variation in real time. TMonitor is able to detect mechanism such as Intel Turbo boost, and therefore allows to clearly visualize its effect as the processor is working.

Check out the image on the right to view the effect of Turbo Technology on an Intel Core i7 870 based on a Lynnfield core. Unfortunately, it only works on Intel Core 2 and Core i3/i5/i7 processors.

WordPress 2.8.4 Released

Posted in Business Software, Development Software, Linux, Mac OS, Site News, Web Apps, Windows

WordPress 2.8.4 has just been released to the public. This version is to patch a vulnerability that was discovered yesterday – a specially crafted URL could be requested that allows an attacker to bypass a security check to verify a user-requested password reset.

As a result, the first account without a key in the database (which is normally the admin), would have its password reset, with the new password emailed to the account owner. Although this does not allow any form of remote access, but it can be quite annoying.

Pidgin 2.5.8 Releases and Fixes Yahoo! Issue

Posted in Fun Stuff, Linux, Mac OS, Site News, Web Apps, Windows

When I was using Pidgin a couple of weeks back, I realised that it was almost impossible to log on to Yahoo! account. The first thing that came into my mind was, has my account been hacked? I checked, it seems okay. I did not bother to rectify this connectivity issue with Yahoo! as most of my contacts are from MSN. Only a few days back did I checked the update from Pidgin website that Yahoo! has changed its security protocol that disallowed previous versions of Pidgin to connect; therefore, Pidgin 2.5.8 has been released to rectify this issue.

Amongst the changes were fixes to ICQ crash, MSN crash for users with long buddy lists, Yahoo crash, as well as receiging messages from the web version of MySpace IM and signing on to MySpace IM if users have empty buddy list.

The strong recommendation from the Pidgin developers is: Upgrade to this 2.5.8 version if you have not done so.
